Black Thought brings its attention to detail on stage in the ever-changing world of finance. And he plans to help the black community in the process.
The Roots frontman announced his new venture on Instagram, revealing that he had joined venture capital firm Impellent Ventures as a general partner. In a move that will help diversify his portfolio, Black Thought’s mission in his newly appointed role is to demystify the world of finance and bridge the gap for black entrepreneurs.
“Financial literacy and an understanding of investing are the first steps to building generational wealth,” the emcee told The Roots in an Instagram post. “Space has always been quite intimidating, difficult to navigate. I intend to change that.
Led by David Brown and Philip Beauregard, Impellent Ventures is a company that hopes to back Rust Belt startups that can benefit from capital connections in tech hubs like New York and Boston. Additionally, the Rochester, NY-based company hopes the inclusion of Tariq Trotter will inspire others from underrepresented communities to throw their hats into the circle of investors. And Black Thought thinks he’s the perfect vessel.
“My brand is kind of like a bridge, and then people also turn to my lyrical content for historical and political commentary, which helps inform them,” Trotter tells Axios. “When people see me on the street, they don’t feel like I’m the kind of celebrity so far away from them, on another planet with nothing in common.
“There’s a blue-collar rock star thing about The Roots that’s approachable and understandable, and I think any company or brand aligned with that will come across more too.”
Elsewhere, Black Thought recently released a video for “Because,” featuring Joey Bada$$, Russ and Dylan Cartlidge. The single is set to appear on his collaborative LP with Danger Mouse titled Cheat Codes.
His upcoming collaboration with Danger Mouse will feature the aforementioned artists Michael Kiwanuka, Raekwon, Kid Sister, A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, MF Doom and Conway the Machine.
Cheat Codes should drop on August 12.
